Welder

For more than 160 years Oldham Engineering has turned complex drawings into reliable industrial equipment that keeps plants running. As a Coded Welder you will produce the high-integrity fabrications that sit at the heart of our turnkey projects, from one-off prototypes to large refurbished assemblies. Your work directly determines whether a customer’s critical asset ships on time, first time, and to the exacting standards our clients demand.

Performance Objectives

  • Deliver coded welds (ASME IX, Norsok, BS EN ISO 9606) that pass first-time NDT and visual inspection on 98 % of jobs, keeping rework below 2 % of labour hours.
  • Complete assigned fabrication packages to drawing, WPS and delivery schedule so that downstream machining and assembly start on the planned date.
  • Maintain personal welding qualification continuity and update procedure records so that every weld remains fully traceable for audit and certification.
  • Identify and raise fit-up, distortion or material issues before welding starts, reducing non-conformance reports by at least 20 % versus the previous year.
  • Support weekend or shutdown work when required so that customer outage windows are never missed.
  • Coach apprentices and less-experienced welders on technique and quality, contributing to a measurable improvement in first-time pass rates across the shop.

Environment & Resources

You will work in our modern, well-equipped Oldham fabrication bay alongside coded welders, platers and inspectors, reporting to the Fabrication Supervisor. You will have access to MIG, MAG, TIG and MMA plant, positioners, overhead cranes, dedicated NDT facilities and full WPS/PQR documentation. The company is ISO 9001 certified and holds Investors in People status; safety, quality and training resources are provided without compromise.

Essential Qualifications

  • Current coded welder qualifications covering the processes and positions used on our typical medium-to-heavy fabrications (carbon, stainless and low-alloy steels).
  • Proven ability to interpret complex fabrication drawings, WPS and quality plans and to produce welds that meet them first time.
  • Minimum three years’ experience in a coded, medium-heavy engineering or pressure-vessel environment.
  • Competence in preparing joints, controlling distortion and completing weld maps and traceability records.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to work occasional overtime or shutdowns.

Role Selling Points

  • Work on genuine turnkey projects that range from precision prototypes to multi-tonne industrial equipment, not repetitive production runs.
  • Join a 160-year-old, privately owned company that invests in people, plant and apprenticeships rather than chasing quarterly numbers.
  • See your welds through machining, assembly and test – full visibility of the finished product.
  • Stable, long-term workload from both new-build and refurbishment contracts across energy, process and heavy industry.

If you take pride in first-time-right coded work and want to be part of a team that still believes engineering should be done properly, apply now. Send your CV and copies of current qualifications to careers@oldham-eng.com quoting “Coded Welder”.
